Looking after your pet
A few basics for each of the pets we look after. Not sure about something? Pop in and ask.
- Keep fresh water within reach all day.
- Change food slowly over about a week to avoid tummy upsets.
- Daily walks and playtime keep dogs fit and happy.
- Brush regularly, and check ears, paws and teeth while you are at it.
- Ask your vet which worming and flea treatment suits your dog.
- Fresh water every day. Many cats like it a little away from their food.
- Scoop the litter tray daily and keep it somewhere quiet.
- A scratching post saves your sofa. Cats need to scratch.
- Cats love high perches and cosy hiding spots.
- Change food slowly so fussy tummies can keep up.
- Rabbits, guinea pigs and chinchillas need good hay available all day.
- Fresh water every day, and fresh bedding to keep things clean.
- Chewing keeps teeth worn down, so give them hay and safe things to gnaw.
- Rabbits and guinea pigs are sociable and are happiest with company of their own kind.
- Give them space to run, hide and explore.
- Keep garden feeders and bird baths clean to help stop illness spreading.
- Fresh water matters in winter too. Check it has not frozen.
- Put feeders where cats cannot easily creep up.
- Pet birds like toys to climb and chew. Ask us what suits your bird.
- Only feed what your fish can eat in a couple of minutes. Overfeeding is a common mistake.
- Regular partial water changes keep a tank healthy.
- Let a new tank settle before adding fish, and add them a few at a time. Ask us how.
- Fresh water every day, with layers pellets as the main food.
- Grit helps hens digest their food.
- Check for mites regularly, especially in warm weather.
- A secure coop keeps foxes out at night.
These are general tips, not veterinary advice. Your vet is the best person to ask about your pet's health.

Did you know?
Six quick facts to share at the dinner table.
- A cat can sleep for 12 to 16 hours a day.
- Rabbit teeth never stop growing. Chewing hay keeps them just right.
- Guinea pigs get lonely on their own. They love having a pal.
- Dogs cool down mostly by panting, not by sweating like we do.
- Hens can lay eggs without a rooster. Those eggs just will not hatch into chicks.
- Most fish do not have eyelids, so they rest with their eyes open.
